Intermittent hypoxia: treatment for cell regeneration

What is intermittent hypoxia?

Intermittent hypoxia-hyperoxia is a training method that exposes the body to controlled intervals of air with less oxygen than usual, similar to the conditions we experience at high altitudes. This technique improves health and performance by stimulating the active regeneration of mitochondria, which are responsible for supplying cellular energy.

Due to our stressful lifestyles and lack of time, mitochondria can sometimes become severely damaged. Added to this is the natural ageing process that affects everyone. Damaged mitochondria produce less energy, making the person feel more fatigued, more prone to infections or less productive in their daily life – this is known as mitochondrial dysfunction. Currently, one in three people suffer from it.

At Monarka, we offer intermittent hypoxia therapy or training, also known as IHHT therapy, thanks to state-of-the-art German technology, Hypoxbreath. You can improve your health, physical and intellectual performance, promote cell regeneration, stimulate weight loss, lower stress levels, and even improve the vascularisation of your skin, among other benefits.

Hypoxia training treatment

The treatment takes place in our clinic under medical supervision using Hypoxbreath, a device that allows intermittent hypoxia and hyperoxia training with artificial intelligence support. These training sessions are carried out with a mask that administers oxygenated air, in a relaxed position, usually sitting or lying down. Personalised protocols are established to meet the specific needs of each person, defining intervals of a few minutes with less oxygen (hypoxia) and intervals with more oxygen (hyperoxia).

During the hypoxia period, damaged mitochondria break down when they receive less oxygen, and the number of healthy mitochondria increases. This provides greater protection against oxidative stress, increased energy and improved athletic performance.

According to the latest scientific studies, this treatment is not only ideal for professional athletes, but also for anyone experiencing fatigue, lack of energy or mild cognitive impairment.

Frequently asked questions

Hypoxia-hyperoxia is recommended for athletes who want to improve their performance and people suffering from fatigue who want to regain their vitality and/or reduce stress. It can also be helpful for patients who want to lose weight. However, it is not recommended for people with heart disease.

Treatment with hypoxbreath® uses state-of-the-art technology and is safe. This machine has independent safety devices that ensure oxygen saturation levels and O2 concentration in the breathable air remain within the pre-set range at all times. It is a non-invasive and simple treatment, as the patient remains in a resting position throughout the process.

Sessions usually last between 30 and 60 minutes. It all depends on each patient’s response and their particular case, as each treatment is personalised taking into account their condition and needs.

It does not usually have side effects. However, in rare cases, it can cause dizziness, headaches or fatigue. For this reason, it is essential to undergo intermittent hypoxia in a specialised clinic and always under medical supervision.
