Why we have trouble sleeping and measures to improve sleep and night-time relaxation
Often, the stress of the day causes us to overproduce the stress hormone (cortisol), and in order to fall asleep, cortisol levels need to be low so that the night-time hormone, melatonin, can be produced.
If stress causes us to become tense and rigid, this will interfere with the relaxation needed to fall asleep.
It is advisable to include relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation before bedtime in our daily routine.
There are also foods rich in tryptophan, such as bananas, nuts and milk, which help us fall asleep. Magnesium, on the other hand, aids relaxation.
If we eat a large or late dinner, or drink alcohol, our body may not rest properly and we may even wake up during the night.
